Driving to work this morning over Memorial Bridge, I noticed the flags being flown at half-staff.  I was guessing it had something to do with what went down last Wednesday at the Capital in Washington D.C.  Well, after a quick deep dive, here' what we know.

According to an article on KFYR-TV, this was ordered by Governor Doug Burgum.  Burgum directed all government agencies to fly ol' glory and the North Dakota flag at half-staff until sunset Wednesday, January 13th.  Governor Burgum is also encouraging all North Dakotan's to do this at their residences and businesses.

This is as a sign of respect for the service and sacrifice of U.S. Capitol Police Officers Brian Sicknick and Howard Liebengood and all Capitol Police officers and law enforcement across the nation.

Both of these officers lost their lives responding to the riots Wednesday at the United States Capitol, according to United States Capitol Police.  Brian Sicknick had served with the United States Capitol Police since 2008.  Howard Liebengood, who also responded to the riots, died Saturday, while off duty.  Liebengood had served with United States Capitol Police since 2005.

Governor Doug Burgum's directive is accordance with a proclamation issued this morning by President Donald Trump.

I stopped over my lunch hour, and snapped a picture of the United States flag on Memorial Bridge.  It really got me thinking about all of the brave men and women who have given their lives, so I can live in the land of the free.  It's an act that none of us should ever take lightly.
