In an attempt to trim nearly $13 million from its budget, the University of North Dakota athletic department announced Tuesday (4/12) that it will eliminate the baseball and golf programs.

A press conference has been called for 4 p.m. this afternoon to make the announcement official.

According to the Grand Forks Herald, the two programs will cease to exist beginning next season.

The University of North Dakota has had some sort of baseball program since the late 1800s and made appearances in the NCAA Division II Tournament three different times (1967, 1993, 2004). The team also made an appearance in the Division II College World Series in 1993, according to Wikipedia.

The school's golf program, meanwhile, has been played every year since 2008.

Falling oil and commodity prices have caused lower than expected revenue forecasts, which is why the school had to cut the programs, according to the Grand Forks Herald.

The timing of this announcement is somewhat surprising, considering we're just a few days removed from the school's men's hockey team winning their eighth national championship.
