With Nirvana set to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tonight in Brooklyn, I feel like there's no better time than the present to revisit one of their best television performances.

Nirvana was just one of the musical acts scheduled to perform at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards, which were hosted by Dana Carvey.

Kurt Cobain wanted to perform a new song he had written, entitled "Rape Me", but the MTV suits wouldn't allow it. So, to give them a small heart attack, Cobain begins Nirvana's performance by playing the first few bars of "Rape Me", before launching into the band's hit "Lithium".

The highlight of the performance, though, is when bassist Krist Novoselic attempts the ultimate rock star move and launches his bass in the air. Unfortunately, Novoselic can't catch the bass on the way down and it knocks him out cold.

This performance would cement Nirvana as one of the most volatile live acts in rock and roll and add to their increasing stardom.

The surviving members of Nirvana will perform tonight, April 10th, at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Brooklyn, New York. Rumor has it that Joan Jett will join the band on-stage.
