  • Roger Maris

    Major League Baseball Player

    September 10, 1934 - December 14, 1985

    Roger Maris is best known for breaking Babe Ruth's single-season record of 60 home runs with 61 home runs in 1961. He played 12 total seasons for teams including the Cleveland Indians, Kansas City Athletics, New York Yankees, and the St. Louis Cardinals.

    Maris is buried in the city he grew up in at Holy Cross Cemetery, Fargo.

  • Stan Kostka

    Professional Football Player

    July 8, 1912 - February 3, 1997

    Stan Kostka began his football career as a fullback for the University of Minnesota Gophers football team, winning the 1934 National Championship. Kostka went on to play in the NFL for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He even coached the successful NDSU Bison for a period of time (1941, 1946-47).

    Kostka is buried at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Fargo.

  • Dean Kutz

    Professional Jockey

    August 18, 1956 - Septermber 26, 2004

    Unless you are familiar with horse racing, you may not be familiar with Dean Kutz. However, Kutz overcame countless physical setbacks and was one of the finest horseracing jockeys in America. He has 2,835 victories and earned more than $33.6 million.

    Kutz died at the age of 48 from cancer and is buried in Carrington at the Carrington Cemetery.

  • Ken Hunt

    Professional Baseball Player

    July 13, 1934 - June 8, 1997

    Originally from Grand Forks, Ken Hunt played outfield for the New York Yankees as a utility player. He went on to play for the Los Angeles Angels and the Washington Senators.

    Hunt is buried at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Fargo, not far from former teammate, Roger Maris.

  • Clifford Joseph 'Fido' Purpur

    Professional Hockey Player

    September 16, 1912 - February 21, 2001

    Clifford 'Fido' Purpur, of Grand Forks, played for the CHL, NHL, USHL, AHA, USHL, and the NCAA hockey leagues. He played for many teams including the Grand Forks Falcons, Minneapolis Millers, St. Louis Eages, Chicago Blackhawks and more. He coached the University of North Dakota and was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 1947.

    Fido is buried in Grand Forks at the Memorial Park Cemetery.

  • Larry Steinbach

    Professional Football Player

    December 23, 1900 - January 29, 1967

    Larry Steinbach got his break with the NFL thanks to his St. Thomas College football coach, Joe Boland. The Chicago Bears asked Boland if he knew any good tackles, Boland recommended Steinbach. He played one season for the Bears and moved on to the Chicago Cardinals. He finished his NFL career with the Philadelphia Eagles.

    Steinbach is buried in Jamestown at the Calvary Cemetery.

  • Dewey Williams

    Professional Baseball Player

    February 5, 1916 - March 19, 2000

    Dewey Williams was a backup catcher for the Chicago Cubs from 1944 - 1946 and the Cincinnati Reds in 1948.

    Williams is buried at Riverview Cemetery in Williston.
