Every year on the 4th of July in Bismarck, there's at least a couple of big parties that you may or may not have heard about.  These parties and fireworks shows would rival anything that you would see in a big city like Fargo, Grand Forks or anywhere else.  National bands, booze and big-time fireworks.  Sounds fun right?  The only problem, they are by invitation only.  The who's who of Bismarck get to attend.  No invitation?  You're not getting in.  However, there may be away for you to enjoy some of the show.  More on that in a minute.

This year, both of these secret society parties are taking place on Saturday, July 3rd.  At Lakewood in Mandan, if you happen to hear "Fishing in the Dark" playing in the distance, it's not somebodies Amazon Echo.  The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is performing LIVE in concert.  Yep, the actual band.  They will be playing Saturday night, followed by a big fireworks show.

At Whispering Bay on the Bismarck side of the river, the classic country band Kentucky Headhunters will be performing on Saturday, July 3rd.  An earth shattering fireworks show is planned right after the concert.  Again, this is an invitation only event.  You can't just pull up on shore and crash the party.  There will be security on hand to make you wish you didn't do that.

However, there might be away for you to enjoy these two events and crash the party so to speak.  There's nothing from preventing you from anchoring your boat in the either of the bays.  If you launch a boat in navigable water, you are entitled to go anywhere your boat can take you.  That's North Dakota law.  It's not considered trespassing if you were to say stay in your boat in the bay.  Boom, you're a part of the party.  Kind of.  Another option would be to beach your boat on the fox island sandbar.  You'll have a good look at the fireworks anyway.

There you go.  My guide to crash two of Bismarck Mandan's biggest 4th of July parties without getting beat up or going to jail.  Have a safe and happy 4th!
