There's still a few months left in 2015, but with traffic fatalities already eclipsing the century mark, it's safe to assume that the number of deaths on North Dakota roadways this year will exceed the number in 2014.

According to InForum, there were 77 traffic deaths recorded at this time last year. There ended up being 135 by the end of the year. The number of traffic-related deaths in North Dakota this year currently sits at 103.

InForum asked Lt. Tom Iverson why he thought traffic deaths were up in 2015, though he wasn't able to pinpoint an exact answer:

I don't think there's anything that we can necessarily point our finger at that's out of the ordinary. Hopefully we're able to finish the year and have a safe rest of the year, but we'll be doing our part out there as far as enforcement and education.

McKenzie and Williams counties lead the state in traffic-related deaths for 2015.

The DOT has set a goal to reduce the three-year average of traffic deaths in North Dakota to less than 100 per year.
