North Dakota state lawmakers are looking to help kids and teens who suffer from mental health issues. Lawmakers hope to prevent young people from committing suicide by mandating resources for mental help in North Dakota schools.

KFYR-TV is reporting that North Dakota lawmakers are pushing a bill "that would mandate mental health and wellness for middle and high schoolers." The report says that the bill would make it so students would have resources for help and schools would have standards for helping the students in distress. This kind of program could be great for North Dakota kids.

According to KFYR-TV, the United Health Foundation marks North Dakota as the ninth highest rate of teen suicide. The news report also says that teen suicide in the state is well above the national average, even with existing mental help in some of our state's schools. Get the full story here.

When I was growing up, I am not sure there was even a school counselor. There was no talk about the importance of caring for mental health. The attitude was more, "God will not give you anything you can't handle," and "life is unfair, get used to it."

Those types of "solutions" for teenage problems only make it harder for those who are in pain to reach out for help. So, it is important to provide resources and education to help students cope with their "young people problems" and/or other deep issues affecting their lives.

Let's hope that lawmakers really do see the importance of offering mental health resources to kids.
