North Dakota is One of the Safest States in the U.S.

Recently, it was determined that Bismarck is the 11th safest city in North Dakota. Well, not only are we in a safe city, but in one of the safest states as well.

According to 24/7 Wall St., North Dakota is listed as the 10th safest state in the country. Despite the fact that overall crime in the nation was up by 3 percent in 2015, it decreased by 11.5 percent in North Dakota.

For the country, there's an average of 383 violent crimes committed for every 100,000 Americans. In North Dakota, we're well below that number with 239 violent crimes for every 100,000 people.

The rankings also determined the statistics based on North Dakota's population, poverty level, and total number of murders committed. Here's how the numbers stacked up:

> Total 2015 murders: 21.0 (5th lowest)
> Poverty rate: 11.0% (9th lowest)

Vermont, Maine, and Virginia finished as the top three safest states respectively. The bottom three are New Mexico, Nevada, and Alaska ranking as the most dangerous state, based on the data collected in the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report Program.
