North Dakota is the neediest state in America. At least that's what the most recent update to the Human Needs Index shows according to a press release put together by the Salvation Army and the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy.

The Human Needs Index looks at seven different variables of need in order to come up with their ranking. The factors they look at are meals, groceries, housing, clothing, furniture, medical bills and energy bills.

The most recent set of data is based on survey results from 2015. The Human Needs Index (HNI) scale begins at 0 showing a minimum level of need. North Dakota's need is currently ranked the highest with an HNI index of 3.80. Nevada is right behind at 3.51 followed by Pennsylvania at 2.27.

If you are in need of any kind of assistance you can look for programs in your area at the North Dakota Department of Human Services website.
