A study has come out that came out ranks the amount of tax that each state puts on gas throughout the U.S. North Dakota has the 35th highest gas tax in the country.

That actually means the state has the 16th lowest gas tax in the country, which is relatively good. Gas taxes tend to account for anywhere in between 11% and 29% percent of the total cost, depending on the state.

24/7 Wall St. performed the study which measured not only gas tax, but also average gas price in each state, state and federal taxes as percentage of gas price (each state tax is different), and percentage of roadways in sub-optimal condition. The numbers for North Dakota are as follows:

> State gas tax: 23.0 cents / gal.
> Gas price: $2.29 / gal. (25th lowest)
> State + fed. taxes as pct. of gas price: 18.1% (9th lowest)
> Pct. of roadway in sub-optimal condition: 44% (tied – 17th lowest)

Pennsylvania took the title of highest gas tax at 58.2 cents per gallon, while also an average gas price of $2.60 per gallon. The lowest gas tax goes to Alaska at 12.3 cents per gallon, despite having an average gas price of $2.77 per gallon.
