The Minnesota Wild made a big splash in NHL free agency on Tuesday, luring left winger Thomas Vanek away from the Montreal Canadians with a three-year deal.

In nine seasons in the NHL, Vanek has scored 277 goals. He has also amassed 279 assists, according to NHL.com.

Originally from Vienna, Austria, Vanek was a star at the University of Minnesota and still resides in the state in the offseason. Some suspect that that was a major reason why he decided to sign with the Wild.

Vanek will join his former teammate, Jason Pominville, in Minnesota.
