Mark up another record breaking moment for Metallica. The band's S&M2 film has just claimed the title as the largest ever global rock event cinema release in history, taking in $5.5 million at the box office.

The movie screened last week in over 95 countries and more than 3,700 cinemas worldwide. The film achieved a significant global screen average of $1,500 with 460,000 admissions, with $1.2 million of the total $5.5 million tally coming from North American screenings. Thanks to the incredible demand, Trafalgar Releasing will bring back Metallica's S&M2 concert film for one more night of screening on Oct. 30.

The S&M2 concert reunited Metallica with the San Francisco Symphony orchestra to mark the 20th anniversary of their Grammy-winning S&M album. This time around, the symphony was led by Michael Tilson Thomas, who took over for the late Michael Kamen who conducted the symphony during their 1999 recording.

In addition to playing classic favorites, the new shows that took place at the newly opened Chase Center in San Francisco allowed the band to perform some of their post-1999 music with symphonic arrangements.

Marc Allenby, CEO of Trafalgar Releasing has said on the success: “The S&M² shows illustrated the immense power of the iconic collaboration between Metallica and San Francisco Symphony, from the critical and audience acclaim, to the box office results in cinemas worldwide, this film truly exemplifies the power of bringing fans together around the world via the big screen.”

Tickets for the Oct. 30 screenings will go on sale tomorrow (Oct. 16) at theaters worldwide. Get more info on the screenings closest to you at Metallica.film.
