24/7 Wall St. released a survey of the largest companies in each state and their location. Even though most of the Fortune 500 companies are located in New York around the heartbeat of Wall St, there are still some big movers and shakers out of the skyscrapers and metro areas.

For instance, discount big box store headquarters are as far away from Wall Street as possible. Wal-Mart is in Bentonville, AR.  Exxon Mobil is the largest company in Texas and the second-largest in the U.S. Others are obvious, In Michigan, General Motors is the biggest.

In North Dakota, MDU Resources Group in Bismarck in the largest company in the state.

The development of the Bakken Shale in 2007 precipitated a surge in natural gas production in North Dakota. While MDU Resources Group, an energy distribution company,  benefited from the statewide boom, the company was among the largest North  Dakota-based companies by revenue prior to the boom. With $4.7 billion in  revenue reported last year, the company is today the largest based in the state.  MDU Resources Group is headquartered in Bismarck, on the Missouri River.
