Wiener fans rejoice! Today (July 23rd) is National Hot Dog Day!

Whether it was at school, at a baseball game, or at a picnic...it's pretty safe to assume that almost every American has consumed a hot dog at some point in their life.

How many hot dogs do Americans eat, you ask? Well, according to the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council, more than 700 million packages of hot dogs were sold at retail stores in 2011. That number does not include sales at Wal-Mart, which does not report data. That's more than $1.7 billion in 2011 alone.

The National Hot Dog & Sausage Council also conducted a survey of ballparks in 2013 and they projected that ballparks will sell over 20 million hot dogs this season.

Here are some other fun hot dog-related facts from the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council:

  • New Yorkers spent more money on hot dogs in retail stores in 2012 ($113 million) than any other market in the country
  • Hot dog producers estimate that an average of 38 percent or $614 million of the total number of hot dogs are sold between Memorial Day and Labor Day
  • Ten percent of annual retail hot dog sales occur during July, which is designated as National Hot Dog Month.

So, enjoy your delicious frank today! You, obviously, won't be the only one.
