Happy Birthday Robin – You Will Never Be Forgotten.
I came across my favorite memory of Robin Williams this morning and would like to share it with you in just a bit. This gentle genius of a man captivated live audiences with his crazy energy and unbelievable comedy. He was a whirlwind of energy when he was on talk shows like THE TONIGHT SHOW with Johnny Carson - you could see his mind racing a trillion times over while being interviewed LIVE - nothing planned or rehearsed - IMPROMPTU GOLD.
Robin started out like all the other stand-up comedians out there, performing in comedy clubs and gaining his chops and experience. Early on though such brilliant future stars like David Letterman could see that Robin was a shooting star ready to soar through all the black holes in space and become a legend. He became known as of course the wacky alien from the planet Ork - the TV show MORK & MINDY first aired September 14, 1978. That would last for four years until he took his talents to the big screen. In 1997 he won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in the movie GOOD WILL HUNTING.
He was a man that just radiated comedy, he could turn any conversation into laughter. He also was going through something that very few people knew about, depression and anxiety were slowly killing him. Robin shocked the whole world when he took his life on August 11, 2014. Further investigations into his death revealed that through a study of his brain tissue, he suffered from "diffuse Lewy body dementia" - constant torment in his head. Extremely sad how his life ended. Today is his birthday. I choose to remember him from a video. In 2007 Robin was visiting Camp Arifjan in Kuwait as part of a USO tour for U.S. service members - he was there for support, to bring some much- needed laughter. Watch his real reaction when his show comes to a halt - feel his concern and his true compassion as he stood still. For more on that event and to watch the video click here.
