You might want to secure the patio furniture before you go to bed tonight.  Bismarck Mandan is now in an enhanced risk for severe weather late tonight.

The main threat for these storms is golf ball sized hail and damaging winds up to 70 miles per hour. There is a chance for significant rain with these storms as well. This is something that is very much needed in the Bismarck Mandan area, as we continue to be in a moderate drought. We have a precipitation deficit over over 6 inches so for in 2020. Since January 1st, we've only had just over 6 inches of precipitation in Bismarck Mandan. Normal for this time of year is over 12 inches. This time last year we were over 14 inches.

Here's your forecast for the rest of Thursday. You can expect muggy conditions with a high in the low 90's. There will be a 40% chance of thunderstorms after 2 am and increasing to 70% chance by morning. Thunderstorms will linger into Friday morning. You can expect between a tenth to a quarter of an inch of rain. Higher amounts are possible if we get under the right thunderstorm. The rest of the weekend looks magnificent with high's in the low 80's, and the wind shouldn't be much of a problem either.

I'm not holding my breath, as the weather experts have been mostly wrong this Summer when it comes to storms. We've had so few, and the ones we do have always seem to break apart before they get to Mandan. Just in case, I'll try to remember to secure the backyard.
