Bismarck Airport Needs Security Upgrade

New Transportation Security Administration guidelines have been set for Bismarck Municipal Airport due to an increase in travel.

TSA has said the private security firm currently in operation at the airport no longer meets standards for training and arrest authority. Should the TSA standards not be met, the airport would risk losing federal aid. TSA currently pays for a portion of the airport's security.

The estimated cost of the upgraded security to meet standards is at $500,000. This amount is twice what Bismarck Airport currently pays. The upgraded security would likely require Bismarck police officers to work as part of the airport security.

A meeting amongst city officials and commissioners is set to take place, as will a vote on what changes are to be made. The standards will need to be met by July, while the new security standards will go into effect in January 2018.
