Today (August 24) is the first day of school for the Bismarck and Mandan public school systems.

As KXMB News notes, "with over 30 schools in the community opening at once, the risk of hitting a pedestrian will increase dramatically next week."

The speed limit according to NDDOT is 20mph, when driving near a school during recess, opening hours, or closing hours.

The Bismarck Police remind commuters that passing a stopped school bus when the red lights are flashing is considered a serious infraction and can result in up to six points on your driving record.

For students who now have their licenses are driving themselves, Emily Medalen, the North Dakota Traffic Safety Manager has some advice. {KX News}

"It's not uncommon to speed out the door and rush to school when you're running a few minutes late in the morning," says Ms. Weaver But, "those school zone slow-down areas are not something to take lightly."
