The Travel Channel has a very interesting program that I often watch called 'Mysteries at the Museum.' Last night, they featured a segment on Zap, North Dakota. Zip to Zap, to be exact. I have often heard the phrase but have you ever heard the back story of how it all started?

Back in May of 1969, Chuck Stroup and other NDSU students could not afford to go to Fort Lauderdale, Florida for spring break, so they decided to Zip to Zap! Zap is a small town located in West Central North Dakota. You can watch the Travel Channel Video here.

Stroup placed an add in his college newspaper for the event and word spread to college students as far away as Texas and Florida. Several thousand students made the Zip to Zap and partied for several days, drank the small town bars out of alcohol, and that's when the trouble really began!

Students then began rioting and destroying property in Zap, forcing the mayor to call in the National Guard. When all was said and done, it was around $25,000 in damages that the NDSU students had to pay back. In 1969, that was a lot on money.
