Maroon 5 had no chance in Hell. During last night’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view, WWE took a hilarious shot at Maroon 5’s upcoming Super Bowl Halftime Show performance while offering a high-flying alternative.

WWE has long been an ally of the rock and metal world, inviting acts like Code Orange, Halestorm, Cane Hill and Nita Strauss to perform at PPV events in the last couple of years, while the NFL hasn’t given a headlining Super Bowl Halftime slot to a rock band since The Who in 2010.

Last night, WWE announced the return of Halftime Heat for the first time in 20 years. The NXT brand will be showcased during halftime as Aleister Black, Velveteen Dream and Ricochet will face Johnny Gargano, Tommaso Ciampa and Adam Cole in a six-man tag match.

“At halftime, why watch this? [crowd jeering] When you can watch this!” WWE announced while “Maroon 5?” and an unflattering photo of Adam Levine took up the screen. WWE even prefaced the diss with images of disappointed, frustrated and crying fans. You’re a savage, Vince McMahon.

NXT champion Tommaso Ciampa piled on just minutes after the Halftime Heat reveal:

Twitter lit up with fans loving the Maroon 5 diss, so it looks like WWE found the perfect gimmick to put over Halftime Heat. Fans can watch the six-man match on the WWE Network during halftime.
