It's no secret that North Dakota is one of the most financially successful states in the country, but it turns out the state's residents aren't doing too bad either.

According to a new study from Nerdwallet.com, which looked at credit scores, mortgages, and other data, three North Dakota cities rank in the top fives places where people are in the best financial shape.

Nerdwallet.com took the following data and then gave cities a score out of 100: homes with over one mortgage, a home equity loan or both, monthly income used for mortgage and related housing cost, average credit score, Average consumer debt as a percentage of per capita income, average credit card debt, and average number of credit cards.

With a score of 85.39, Dickinson took the top spot on Nerdwallet.com's list, followed closely by Bismarck at 85.34. Minot was in fourth place with a score of 80.16.

According to the Grand Forks Herald, Dickinson's average credit score of 689 was 20 points higher than the national average, helping it secure the top spot.
