Surprise! Radio Doesn’t Pay As Well As You Think

I’ve worked in radio now for close to 10 years and one of my favorite things to hear is peoples thoughts on what working in radio is really like. According to some, I only work 5 hours a day, hang out with rockstars constantly, and make tons of cash. That couldn’t be further from the truth and now, thanks to Forbes, I can give you a glimpse into my wallet to prove it.

Forbes recently released their list of Surprisingly Low-Paying Jobs and I can honestly say that I didn’t expect to see Radio and TV announcers on the list…but there we are. I guess I was under the assumption that people already knew how little we made compared to how much work we actually do but I guess I was mistaken.

According to the article, the average annual income of Radio and TV announcers is $40, 510, which honestly seems a bit high. However, when you take into account how much some of the bigger personalities make, I guess the average is pretty close. The lowest 10% of us make $17,150, which is right on point. The reason I know that is because when I started in radio 10 years ago, my full-time salary was $18,500 and I continued to make that throughout the majority of my time back home.

So, the next time you ask something what it’s like to work in radio, here’s how they should respond: I love what I do and wouldn’t trade it for the world. I work 9-10 hour days, nights, weekends, holidays, and any other time I’m asked because this is the career path I chose. I don’t make hundreds of thousands of dollars, I don’t hang out with rockstars all day, I don’t get everything for free, though those perks are there sometimes. Ultimately, I do this job because I love it…It’s definitely not for the money.”

Other jobs on the list include firefighter, private detective, and flight attendants. For a complete list, click here
