On Monday (Dec. 11), we learned that Carson Wentz will miss the remainder of the 2017-2018 season due to a torn ACL.

Wentz has a long history of getting treatment at Sanford Health so we reached out to them to get an idea of what the recovery process will be like for one of the NFL's top quarterbacks.

It should be noted that Sanford Health will have no involvement in Wentz's recovery.

Bryan Guthmiller is a physical therapist who specializes in ACL recovery at Sanford Health in Bismarck. We spoke with him to learn more about what the ACL is, how ACL injuries are caused, and the typical length of time it takes for someone to recover from an ACL tear.

Guthmiller says that it used to be about six months before an athlete would get back to regular action. However, over time, Guthmiller says they are learning that it should take longer, possibly up to a year.

Guthmiller referenced an injury to Running Back Adrian Peterson a few years ago in which he was back to action in nine months. It's pretty incredible for an athlete to be able to do that.

No date has been set yet for Wentz's surgery but assuming it takes place within the next couple of weeks, nine months brings us right to the start of the regular season. It's very possible Wentz will miss the entire 2018 preseason but could be ready for opening day.

We'll have to wait and see what team doctors say with regards to Wentz's recovery to know for sure when Wentz will return though. Hopefully it does not take 12 months as that means Wentz would miss a significant part of the 2018 season. But we know that with the talent Wentz has, they don't want to rush him back and risk any further injury.

Listen to our full interview with Guthmiller above to learn more about what kind of therapy is required to come back from an injury like this.
