One of the biggest names in swimming is speaking out against the University of North Dakota's decision to possibly cut the school's swimming and diving programs.

According to the Grand Forks Herald, five-time Olympic gold medalist Katie Ledecky posted the following on her Facebook page, prior to the Intercollegiate Athletics Committee meeting on Tuesday (10/11):

It shouldn't seem all that odd that Ledecky is speaking out against the possible cuts to the University of North Dakota's swimming and diving programs.

First and foremost, she's an ambassador for the sport. During this summer's Olympics, Ledecky became a household name when she won five gold medals, shattering records in the process.

Second, though, is Ledecky's connections to the state of North Dakota. Ledecky's grandfather, Edward Hagan, attended the University of North Dakota and the recreation center in Williston is named after him. Ledecky actually came to North Dakota in 2014 to swim the first ceremonial lap in the center's pool.

The meeting on Tuesday gave coaches and athletes the opportunity to present their case as to why their sports shouldn't be cut. Other sports that could get the axe include softball, men's and women's tennis, and men's and women's golf, among others.
