This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of North Dakota Parks and Recreation. Back in 1965 the park system was established to create outdoor recreation opportunities through diverse parks and programs that conserve the state’s natural diversity.

Huge events are planned for the entire summer to celebrate this milestone, click here for a complete list of events at our state parks. Events include fun for the entire family with tours, prizes, food and more.

The North Dakota Historical Society managed the parks for the first 58 years (from 1907-1965) before the North Dakota Parks and Recreation was established. Today the 23 state parks and recreation areas in North Dakota draw over a million visitors per year. And Fort Abraham Lincoln remains one of the most popular with more than 100,000 visitors annually.

With Memorial weekend just around the corner I suggest you get out this summer and explore all that North Dakota Parks have to offer!
