Dave Grohl is one of a select few musicians to have glimpsed the heights of the music world from two different bands, and in many ways some of the pitfalls that came with Nirvana's instant success have helped him immensely as he's watched Foo Fighters grow to become one of rock's major acts. Grohl recently took some time to reflect on his musical journey with Sam Jones, host of the interview series Off Camera.

Reflecting on Nirvana, he stated, "Unfortunately, Nirvana became too big too quick. Bands are like families that go through uncomfortable growing pains and if it happens all at once, it can be too much to handle."

Grohl says he managed to stay grounded through Nirvana mania by retreating to the safety of his youth. He recalls, "I got lucky cause when the band got popular if I ever felt overwhelmed with what was going on, I'd just go back to Virginia and sleep in the bed that I slept in when I was 5-years-old and have barbecues with my friends from fourth grade."

As for the biggest cautionary tale he learned as a member of Nirvana, Grohl says he decided that he would never do heroin. Though Kurt Cobain's death has been something that Grohl avoided speaking about for years, the rocker opened up about Cobain and his experience dealing with the mourning period after his passing.

"When Kurt died, I woke up the next day and thought, 'I’m lucky to be alive,'" says Grohl. "So much that still, to this day, I feel that every morning when I wake up, because it’s so strange to think that person was just here and now they’re gone. And I’m still here? And maybe tomorrow I could be gone as well? It was a profound revelation I had the day after he died and it changed everything."

He continues, "It honestly changed so much of my life that I felt the most important thing was just appreciating being alive, good day or bad day. But after Kurt died, I really felt that way, like, 'Okay, I’m gonna try this. What do I have to lose? I’m gonna start this band and then I’m gonna be the singer.'"

The full interview has been broken down into 10 video clips, which can be viewed in order at this location. Watch a little more of Grohl discussing his role in Nirvana in the video below and see him comments on Cobain in the clip at the top of this post.
