Ben Affleck Says ‘Justice League’ Is the ‘Product of Two Directors’

Ben Affleck as Batman (Warner Bros.)
Warner Bros.

There’s almost no precedent for Justice League, a massive film on the biggest possible scale from one director (who also directed both of the films that led directly into it) who then left the project in the middle of shooting only to be replaced by another director, one who might be the only person on the planet with more experience making this kind of movie on this kind of scale.

Even the cast admits Justice League is unique in the history of blockbusters. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Batman himself Ben Affleck calls the film (which was started by Zack Snyder, and is now being finished by Joss Whedon in a series of reshoots) “a little bit unorthodox.”

Affleck, who knows a thing or two about directing himself, says that Whedon was “the best person” possible for the job, and describes the result of this pseudo-collaboration as:

…An interesting product of two directors, both with kind of unique visions, both with really strong takes. I’ve never had that experience before making a movie. I have to say, I really love working with Zack, and I really love the stuff we’ve done with Joss.

But will the stuff they did with Zack fit with the stuff they did with Joss? Snyder and Whedon work in the same kinds of worlds, but produce vastly different films, with different visual styles and totally different tones and senses of humor. Can their two unique visions gel together in this case? That’s the $1 billion question that will be answered when Justice League opens on November 17.
