This Day in Rock History: August 20

On this day in rock history, the Beatles spent their last day together as a foursome in Abbey Road, bringing to a close a shooting-star career that saw them quickly rewrite the rules of rock. The session was spent mixing “I Want You” and discussing the track listing for Abbey Road, which at that point was radically different from the finished order. The Beatles’ final new track, George Harrison‘s “I Me Mine,” was completed without John Lennon – just like their Anthology-era reunion songs 25 years later.

Erstwhile Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant was born on this date in West Bromwich. Once he discovered Elvis Presley, however, the Black Country could not longer contain Plant. The late Phil Lynott – heart and soul of Thin Lizzy – was also born on this day in rock history.

As the ’90s dawned, Living Colour released Time’s Up, while Black Sabbath – then featuring a Tony Iommi-led lineup with Tony Martin, Cozy Powell and others – issued the keyboard-laden, but still surprisingly heavy, TYR.
