Abandoned Campfire Believed to Be Cause of Grass Fire South of Bismarck
Nearly 2,000 acres were burned south of Bismarck Monday and Tuesday, April 13th and 14th, and the cause is now believed to be an abandoned campfire.
The Bismarck Tribune is reporting that, though their has been an active red flag warning in place since Saturday, April 11th, someone abandoned a campfire south of Bismarck that may have ignited the massive grass fire.
The fire led to the evacuation of 20 homes and the University of Mary campus. Outside of a shed, though, no structures were damaged by the fire.
The Burleigh County Sheriff's Department has strcitly prohibited all open fires and Burleigh County's emergency manager, Mary Senger, has urged residents to notify authorities if they see any smoke. She also advised residents to avoid the burned acreage south of Bismarck, while firefighters continue to monitor and control hotspots.
